We embarked on a journey from scratch to create a stabilized, independent solar system, not reliant on the grid. This decision stemmed from a desire to tackle problems head-on, amidst the backdrop of a degrading infrastructure and escalating electricity rates.

Our setup includes a non-grid tied inverter, a crucial element for autonomy. The heart of the system is a 12vdc load, though I recommend considering 24 or 48v systems for greater efficiency. Key components include:

  • Home Automation: Enabled with IoT technology, complete with informative graphs and pictures.
  • Gas Appliances: Including a stove with a toast tray, a standby gas heater for hot water, and a mobile gas heater for our jacuzzi.
  • Emergency Backup: A petrol generator, a plan 'C' for those unexpected moments.
  • Water Systems: We implemented rainwater harvesting, powered by an AC pump on the inverter. Retrofit hot water circulation fitted.
  • Outdoor Living: A wood-fueled braai area complements our sustainable lifestyle.
  • Security Measures: Comprising alarms, cameras, gates, and walls for peace of mind.
